The 2.0 Process Safety Culture: Upgrading Learning and Knowledge Management

Upgrade Your Safety Culture

Sound safety culture is a pillar of the processing industry, linking the transformation of workplace safety into competency. Yet, safety culture is often underrepresented as a one-dimensional pyramid focused on group values, attitudes, beliefs, and norms. Using a case study approach, this poster explores how learning management systems (LMS) foster dynamic organizational learning environments to cultivate a healthy process safety culture.

Increase Safety + Reduce Risk

A new report by the Coalition to Prevent Chemical Disasters shows 829 hazardous chemical incidents occurred from January 1, 2021, through October 15, 2023, or roughly one every 1.2 days.

In those facilities, safety was compromised. When there is a weak safety culture, people are likely to be careless, complacent, and willing to compromise. With a positive safety culture, injuries and spills can be avoided.

“In the absence of learning, companies — and individuals — simply repeat old practices. Change remains cosmetic, and improvements are either fortuitous or short-lived.”
